How this site works

Overview

This is a user-contributed website that works on a points system.

All parts of the site are free for users, whether registered or not, and always will be. Revenue is generated through advertising.

You gain points by adding information to the site, and this in turn helps you achieve the next level. Some levels unlock functionality. So this is our way of saying 'thanks' for contributing.

LEVEL 1 (Mulcher)

Searches

Basic search

The basic search facility is the search box you see at the top of every page. This will search all information on plants and also shows you an auto fill which guesses the latin or common names of plants. If you click this you will go straight to that plant.

Advanced search

The advanced search facility enables you to search using a combination of over 40 elements including shape of leave and flower, toxicity, water and light requirements etc.

Identify plant

The plant identification facility searches images uploaded by users. Search options include subject, main and secondary colours of subject, season, shape, width and height of flowers and leaves and more.

Unregistered users

All users whether registered or not can:

  • Use all search facilities
  • Download plant profile PDF's
  • View all plant images
  • View plant profiles
  • View user profiles
  • View forums
  • View blogs

Registered users

Registered users can do everything unregistered users can do and also:

  • Contribute to the Forums
  • Write their own Journal
  • Lock plant attributes (Level 3 users)
  • Add plants
  • Add plant notes
  • Add plant images
  • Add/edit plant attributes (over 80 different categories)
  • Rate images
  • Bookmark plants
  • Contact and bookmark other registered users through a simple messaging system

Plant page

The entire plant page is user generated. The text is automatically created when a registered user edits plant attributes or adds a plant note. All this information, including a sample of images, can be downloaded using the PDF fact sheet link on plant profiles.
