Hi

Firstly, can I say "Well Done!" on the website. I was thinking of creating a plant database for my own purposes but you have beaten me to it!

I'm learning about Permaculture and one of the core things I want to document is the connections between plants (companion planting, allelopathy, plant guilds for example). Would this be possible on this site? If so, can I help? I have some contacts in the permaculture circles who I'm sure would help us get the data structures right.

Looking forward to your reply, kind regards

Mark

Hi Mark and thanks!

It's a lot of work and we're really only getting started now. We're actually redesigning the site and adding in new functionality at the moment including 'gardening companions' and plant guilds would work too but most people don't know what they are ;-). We're going to add them in a bit later this year.

We would like to make the plant profiles more complete but of course it's a huge amount of work and needless to say we don't make any money (not yet anyway). So any help is appreciated.

Fire me an email to mail@plantdatabase.com.au and let me know what you think would be useful?

Cheers, Alan

Hi, Guys.

I find myself in the same boat as Mark, having intended to start trying to put together a database of my own. The site looks fantastic. As a relative gardening newbie though, I'm not sure how much I can contribute in terms of plant information.

I did, however, have some thoughts for site functionality. Not sure if you guys have considered this or not, but what do you think of implementing some kind of calender feature, showing sowing, transplanting and harvesting (among other) information. I was thinking something like this - to make it compatible to those of us in the Southern Hemisphere. While I  am in London now, I do plan to go home to New Zealand eventually.

Shape of possible calender?

As it is a general thing, I figured weekly information would be as specific as you would need. This is just a basic structure, of course I have given no thought to design as yet.

I understand you guys are busy, so if you're interested I could try and make something up myself. Unfortunately I only know flash and action script well enough to attempt it at the moment. I'm having a look at the basics of javascript, but am nowhere near the point of attempting something like this with it.

Is this something you guys might be interested in integrating into your site? I think it has a lot of potential down the road - possible integration with user accounts to allow users to make their own crop rotation or garden management calenders.

Let me know if you would like me to have a crack at it.
